Being good at networking is not just a skill for entrepreneurs but for everyone seeking to build things. Here are seven important thing we think you need to nail to be able to network like a boss and have everyone coming to ask what you are doing to grow and get results from networking.
1. Don’t interrupt people
We have all met that desperate networker who interrupts us just when we were having an important conversation with other people at events. This is a turn off , it kills your opportunity before they even come to you. If there is someone you have been intending to meet, stick around till they finish there conversation. Say a warm hello but professional hello and start a great conversation. How you are seen will determine to a large extent how you will remembered.
2. It’s not about you, it’s about them
Your networking event is not the time to brag about what you are building or the progress your business is making, it’s rather a time to share. Focus on how you can make people you are networking with feel. This include asking them about things that are relevant and important to them. Ask about the project, tell them what you think. This will open doors for you to talk about yours. People tend to like you when they know you have interest in what they are doing.
3. Know how to use your business cards.
Ensure your pack of nicely printed business cards are with you always. It adds tangibility to you and your brand. Your chances of being remembered are higher if you exchange business card with people. It also gives them something to refer to if they ever forget your name. However, it is important to know how to use them. Business cards exchange should come at the end of conversations and not at the beginning. Don’t give your business cards first, ask for theirs at the end of the conversation then give yours. Networking is about people connecting and not just business card exchange.
4. Be a connector for other networkers.
Think about this scenario: while networking with someone who is building an SME accounting software, your friend who just launched a new business walked by, You call your friend “Hey Bimpe, meet James. James was just telling me about his SME accounting software, I think this should fix your needs, just thought I should tell you, you guys need to connect. Bimpe and James will surely remember you for good. You just gained confidence and from both of them. We all like that guy who knows everyone and can connect us to other important people.
5. Don’t seek an immediate Return On Networking (RON)
We’ve all met people who seem to be trying milk us dry at events and asking for what we can do for them almost immediately. Networking is about building relationships, meeting people is the beginning of the process. Instead of looking at what people can do for you, think about what relationship you can build together and where you connect. Keep in touch for the good and not what you want in it.
6. Stay well dressed.
It’s 2014 and there’s no specific dress code for making greatness happen, But even in today’s business world, looking good and dressing sharp open doors for you. It makes people feel comfortable around and this can help them open up to conversations.
7. Keep in touch. Go social.
Send out personal emails to people after events mentioning their names and things peculiar to them. Don’t send out bulk emails to people you met at an event. Connect with them on LinkedIn, follow them on social media, check out their projects and tell them what you think in emails. Relationships should be the ultimate goal of networking.
